Our story
Utalio was created by a dual US–Italian citizen who went through the move-to-Italy research firsthand: tracing the family line for citizenship by descent, registering with AIRE, untangling the impatriati tax regime and the US filing that follows Americans abroad, and weighing where in Italy life would actually work.
The information was out there, but it was scattered across consulate websites, Italian tax journals, expat forums and outdated blog posts. Much of it no longer held after the 2025 citizenship reform and the 2024–2027 tax changes. And no single source tied the pieces together. The best city for you depends on your visa. Your visa depends on your income and work. Your taxes depend on all of it. Utalio exists to connect those dots.
What Utalio does
Answer a short quiz, and Utalio builds one plan that covers:
- Where to live: a recommended city or town plus alternatives, matched to your budget, climate and lifestyle.
- How to work: whether to keep a remote job, which local sectors hire foreigners, and realistic salaries.
- Rent or buy: real price levels and whether buying makes sense yet.
- How to stay: the best visa or citizenship route for you, and your path to permanent residence.
You can also explore cities, residency routes, jobs and housing on your own, or read our guides.
How our plans are made
Data first, AI second. Your answers first go through Utalio's scoring engine, which applies hard rules (visa income thresholds, citizenship-by-descent limits, flat-tax eligibility) to our curated database and shortlists the options that fit. Only then does an AI model write your plan, choosing among those vetted options and explaining them in plain language. It doesn't invent cities, visas or numbers. If the AI is unavailable, you still get a plan built directly from the data.
Our editorial standards
- Official sources first. Legal and visa facts come from Italian government portals (the Foreign Ministry, Interior Ministry, Agenzia delle Entrate, INPS) and the laws themselves.
- Dated and current. Guides show when they were last updated, and we revise them when rules change.
- Honest about uncertainty. Where rules are contested (like court challenges to the 2025 citizenship law), we say so.
- Community wisdom, clearly labeled. Expat forums inform our practical tips, never our legal claims.
- Corrections welcome. Spot something wrong? Tell us and we'll fix it.
How Utalio is funded
Utalio is free to use and supported by advertising. Ads never influence our recommendations: the scoring engine and plans don't know or care who advertises.
What we're not
We're not a law firm, immigration agency or tax advisor, and Utalio isn't a substitute for one. Think of us as the map that helps you ask the right questions, then take them to your consulate, an avvocato or a commercialista. See our Terms of Service.
