Who it's for: Highly qualified remote employees and freelancers working for non-Italian companies.
Requirements
- Annual income of at least about €28,000 (three times the minimum for exemption from health-care cost-sharing)
- 'Highly qualified': a university degree, or 5+ years of relevant experience in IT and some other fields
- At least 6 months of prior remote-work experience
- An employment contract or freelance contracts with non-Italian clients
- Health insurance and proof of accommodation, plus a clean criminal record

- Consulate decision in roughly 30–90 days; 1-year permit, renewable if you still qualify

- €116 visa fee plus the permit fee and insurance

- Yes, remotely for non-Italian clients or employers. You become an Italian tax resident and file Italian taxes

- Renewals count toward the 5 years for an EU long-term permit (check that the permit was continuously held)
