Italy's Digital Nomad Visa: requirements for remote workers
Updated October 5, 2026
Italy's remote-worker visa (since April 2024): the income threshold, the 'highly qualified' test, taxes and employer issues.
The basics
Since April 4, 2024, Italy has offered a visa for highly qualified remote workers employed by, or freelancing for, non-Italian companies. It sits outside the annual quota system and lasts one year, renewable.
Requirements
- Income of at least about €28,000 a year
- A university degree or equivalent professional experience (5+ years in some fields)
- At least 6 months of remote-work experience
- A contract with your employer or clients, health insurance, accommodation and a clean criminal record
The catch: taxes and your employer
Once you live in Italy for more than 183 days a year, you're an Italian tax resident. Your employer may need to set up Italian payroll or use an Employer of Record. Ask HR before you apply. On the plus side, you may qualify for the impatriati 50% exemption.
